This article from Kaschub and Smith, published in 'Research and Issues in Music Education,' was a game changer for me. It helps make the connection between creative intention, expressivity and how people compose.

The article mirrored my own thoughts on why we need to teach composition in schools by stating:
"We should teach music composition in schools because composition allows people to engage in meaning making in a medium that is designed to parallel that of the human experience in multiple aspects."
Using this connection as the core of how and why we teach composition then leads to different approaches to teaching and learning which are as individual to the pupils as the pupils themselves.
It is well worth taking the time to read and digest this article.
